We caught up with Marie, owner of Sincerely Marie boutique in Hyde, Manchester, to hear how she approaches the show, plans her buying, and what she’s most excited for in the season ahead! Alongside discovering new brands and next season inspiration, she shares what keeps her coming back to HFW each season, from networking with fellow retailers to a well-earned dinner at Gianni’s after a busy day on the show floor.

Can you tell us a little about your Boutique, your customers and the brands you stock?

My Boutique is relatively new, just coming up to its 3rd Birthday. It’s in a small town called Hyde, which is also my home town and why I decided to open here. My aim was to target the mature Ladies who still like to touch, feel and try as well as have a conversation. The brands I stock are Lunar, Heavenly Feet, Caprice, ilse Jacobsen and Soruka – Footwear. I also stock Soruka, Zsiska, Sarah Jane Tempest, Eliza Gracious and Park Lane Accessories. Clothing – Sarah Jane Tempest, PINNS, Alice Collins, Malissa J, Heena Fashions, Foreva Young.

What do you like the most about HFW?

It enables me to see what the next season’s colours and fashions are going to be, but most importantly, it allows me to network with the suppliers, new and existing. I also like to meet other boutique owners who don’t see you as competition and share their ideas and knowledge.

Why do you attend HFW?

It’s fairly local to me and I enjoy being able to see the items before I decide to make any purchases.

How do you stay organised and maximise your time during the event?

I’m getting better at this each time I visit. I try and do a day looking around and using the handy directory to mark the suppliers I most likely want to purchase from. I use the directory to make notes also, as there is so much going on. I always feel like a little girl in a sweet shop, so the directory helps me stay organised and focused.

Do you have any networking tips for newcomers?

Don’t be afraid to chat and talk to the suppliers and other boutique owners, it can feel overwhelming when you first attend. Sit and chat at the Prosecco events as well as at the stands.

Where is your favourite place to eat/drink in Harrogate?

The Winter Gardens is my go-to for Breakfast and sets me up for the day. After a long day, my favourite has to be Gianni’s Brio Restaurant.

What are you most excited to see at HFW in August?

I’m always excited to see what the colours are going to be for the following season.

What do you think buyers can gain from attending a show that they can’t get online?

Same as what I offer to my Ladies, the touch and feel. Also, building a relationship with the suppliers, it means so much to converse in person.

What’s the first thing you do when you arrive at the show?

Directory and Pen in hand, and a quick peruse before heading off into the first hall.

Do you have a favourite HFW memory?

Just how welcome I have always been made to feel at this event.

What would you say to someone considering attending HFW for the first time?

GO GO GO, it’s time very well spent and invaluable.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from another buyer?

Think about your customer base, location and try to stock something more unique.

What is one thing that HAS to be in your bag for HFW?

Phone for the Pics, Business cards and always have a few pens for making notes in the directory. Oh, and a bottle of water, it’s thirsty work!

What does your perfect evening after buying at HFW look like?

Back to the hotel, long soak in the bath and out for dinner. 

If you could swap wardrobes with one person for a day, who would it be and why?

Bet Lynch, I’m Leopard print/Animal print mad!

What trend are you most excited about this summer?

Polka Dot!

Who would be your dream celebrity customer and why?

Kate Middleton, she oozes class in everything she wears.
